Tutorial: How to Set Up a WordPress Blog–Part I

I get a lot of messages from other people asking how they can start their own blogs. I’ve decided to create a How-To Blogging series to help answer your questions. This is just the basic set-up, initial post. But I plan on posting about what to write, how to write, blog SEO, tagging, etc. So, please send your questions my way!

Getting started writing your own blog is easier than you may think. You just need a little less than an hour to get started and some inspiration. I think WordPress is one of the better blogging platforms. I’ve put all my most recent blogs on WordPress, and never had an issue. Plus, it’s totally free!

Firstly, visit www.wordpress.com and click the “Get Started” button to create an account.

How to Start a Blog 1

There, you’ll enter your email address, create a username and password, and create your blog name. Think of catchy and fun blog names that aren’t too shortsighted for your goals. If you’re starting a food blog, an exercise blog, or a lifestyle blog, think of something that would roll off people’s tongues. I came up with Small Town Revelations on a whim, and recent changed it to Life With Lyn. I think the second is catchier and people kept telling me how I wasn’t a “small town girl” in the big city anymore. Maybe it was all my posts about people driving too slowly? Ha!

Fortunately, you can always change the blog address later (unless you buy a custom URL). Free blogs will always have the wordpress.com suffix. To get a .com or .org, you have to pay an annual fee.

How to Start a Blog 2

Once you’ve figured all this out, click “Signup.”

It’ll take you to an options page where you can choose to pay for your blog. DON’T FREAK OUT! You can get your blog for free by clicking, “Choose Basic.”

From there, you’ll get a confirmation email.  Once you receive that, click the “Activate Blog” button.

Once you click that, you’ll be directed to a set up page where you can give your blog a title and tag line. You’ll also choose the language here. Click “Next Step” when you’re done here.

You are then directed to an area to browse potential themes (or looks) for your blog. You can always change these, so don’t feel super pressured to figure it all out right away. Some themes are “premium,” which means you have to pay for them. There are plenty of free themes that are customizable, so don’t feel pressured to buy one to make your blog look good.

Then you can create your first post! Once you’ve figured that out, you are directed to your WordPress Dashboard.

Resolution Recap – February

It’s finally Friday! It’s also March.

Dancing Bear GIF

So it’s time to see how everyone’s doing with their New Year’s Resolutions! I’ve never tried to keep up with my resolutions like this before, but I find it helps to keep my mindful of what I’m doing well (so I can continue the success), and what I need to work on to accomplish all my goals.

Ok, here we go.

1. Run 520 miles.

Cold weather running

Still not even close. I thought this one would be an easy one to keep up with (I’m not counting soccer game mileage into this), but I’m only running about 4 miles a week (weak!) with one of my coworkers on our Wednesday lunch breaks. He’s a speedy runner, but I really do need something to train for to really amp up my mileage!

2. Write a novel.

Also not going so well. I really have no motivation to do this by the time I get home. I’m probably going to put this one on the back burner for a while.

3. Read a new book every month.

I read the amazing The Beautiful Mystery at the beginning of Feb and am making my way through Beyond Belief, a biography about Scientology. Pretty interesting so far…

4. Save $2000+.

“Yay, you can get us a new tree!”

So far, so good. I’m on track to save WAY more than this by the time Christmas rolls around. Boom. Never thought I’d be good at saving. The key is to keep up the trend when it’s gift-giving time!

5. Stop biting my nails.

I just got a special nail polish in the mail that’s supposed to support nail growth and deter nail-biting. I got it yesterday, and plan to get it on my hands tonight or tomorrow. It had the best reviews of all the same types of polishes on Amazon. I know it’s more than just nail polish, though. I’ve got to work on my will power in the nail-biting area, too.

6. Get a tattoo.

Haven’t gotten one yet, but I’m looking into it. Gotta save that $$ first.

7. Buy no new clothes in 2013.

This one wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. Now that I work in a place that doesn’t mind if I wear my old lady turtlenecks with cardigans and jeans, I don’t feel like I need to keep up with the latest fashions. Also, I’m much more comfortable all the time. :)

8. Eat out only once a month.

If you remember, I didn’t eat out in January, so I ate out twice in February to make up for it. Once for Thai food (OMG, yum), and once for burritos. When you only have 1 chance to eat out a month, you choose the restaurants you know will make you happy.

Money resolutions are going well this year, writing and fitness resolutions–eh, not so much. Need to work on that department!

How are you doing with your New Year’s Resolutions?

Resolution Recap – 1 Month In

Before we get into my January failures, let’s talk about recurring dreams. I used to have TON of them as a child, and I have a few that resurface every now and again as an adult. Last night, my brain combined 2 recurring dreams. So weird. I’ve had airplane dream before about being stuck on an airplane that is about to launch (except in all these recurring dreams, airplanes are launched in a way similar to slingshots… terrifying). I also have dreams about being stuck in elevators that are going too fast, or weird directions (read: horizontally and diagonally).

Last night my dream combined both. What does that tell you? Well, in both situations, I’m at a total loss of control. I’m not flying the plane, just waiting for someone else to get me to my destination. I’m not controlling the elevator, just waiting for a machine to read my mind and get me where I need to be. Needless to say, these are stressful dreams. I woke up more refreshed than I usually do when I have creepy dreams, though, so at least there’s that!

Thumbs Up!

Man, this is my best crazy face.

Now on to my 2013 resolution failure. We’re a month in, and where do I stand?

1. Run 520 miles.

This averages out to about 10 miles a week. Except that I have only run about 11 miles for the whole month of January (this isn’t including soccer games and boxing warm-ups, etc.). Yup, I let the cold weather get me down. So, should I readjust to try to make up 20 miles throughout the year? Or just go with the flow to get 10 miles a week, still? We’ll see. I know I need to sign up for some races to motivate myself!

Remember when you liked running, Carolyn?

2. Write a novel.

This one is still in the beginning phases, but I don’t really like where I was going so I just stopped. It seems like now that I have a goal, no ideas are coming to my head, and the ones that are seem pretty ridiculous… Maybe I’ll re-read Stephen King’s On Writing. His perspective really inspired me.

3. Read a new book every month.

I failed at this one in January, too. I tried to read this book that a blogger recommended, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson, but I think since it’s more autobiography and less plot-driven novel, I’m a lot less interested. I don’t feel drawn to see what happens next, but just go to it when I need a laugh or right before bed. It seems I need a new book. I can definitely make this month’s up by reading 2 books in February! Just gotta find a good one.

4. Save $2000+ dollars.

I’m getting there. Almost halfway, actually. This may be impeded by the event that you don’t know is happening.

5. Stop biting my nails.

Not even close. I’m thinking this is a later in the year type of goal. Because, I’m addicted to this little nervous habit of mine. I know it’s gross and annoying, but I just. can’t. stop. No willpower right now.

6. Get a tattoo.

Since this is a one-time event type of goal, I definitely haven’t accomplished it yet.

Totoro Tattoo

Totoro tattoo, anyone?

7. Buy no new clothes in 2013.

So far, so good. A whole month without buying extra crap (plus I’m sticking to my grocery budget so far, which brings us to…)

8. Eat out only 1 time a month.

Technically, I balled this one out of the park this month, because I didn’t pay for a single meal out. Sean, however, paid for 3. One was our planned 1 meal a month, and then the Falcons had a chance at the Super Bowl and Sean was afraid he’d make them lose by upsetting the balance of always ordering pizza for the game. After we blew that, we had delicious Thai food after I recovered from illness #2 in this flu season. Technically, though, it was my resolution for me, not my resolution for Sean and I (he was quick to point that out after I told him). So I knocked this one out of the park considering I took my lunch to 3 different restaurants. Stickin’ it to the man!

How are you doing on your resolutions? I say, you win some, you lose some. Better to start anew in February then to ditch your goals completely, right?

Also, HAPPY FRIDAY! To celebrate the day, enjoy one of my favorite GIFs!
