One Wet Weekend

This weekend was one of the best in a long time. Part of the reason, I think, was because soccer was canceled because of the super rain we were having, and we just didn’t have any real plans other than that. We went grocery shopping on Friday evening and stayed up watching the last episode of season 2 of Game of Thrones. I know I should really read the books, but I just can’t stand Martin’s writing style. I feel like it was written by a hormonal teenage boy living out fantasies via book. But, hey, he’s made bank off his horny fantasies.

Saturday we cleaned the house (thrilling, I know). Sean went to renew his license plate for our new address, and I went to CrossFit to try a weekend class. It was actually pretty fun since there were so many people there. It was bring a friend day, so I was kind of a lonely sore thumb, but I still kicked butt on the Quatro de Mayo workout:

May the Fourth be with you

It took me 8:05 with 55# cleans and 15# overhead squats. After some slow attempts at doubleunders, I turned them into 132 singles, which made it go by faster. The cleans felt easy, so I can probably do more weight. That makes me feel like a BAMF because 55# is my clean PR. The EMOM means every minute on the minute you stop whatever you’re doing and do 4 jumping jacks. I was ready for a nap after that one.

I got home, ate something, took a shower, and then headed to Wal-Mart. I hate Wal-Mart, but we needed a shoe rack for the front door since we looked like weird shoe hoarders. We found a wooden, extendable one for $20. It (sadly) took us 15 minutes or so to assemble it because who needs directions?!

I took a nap after that, and we made a pizza dough to prep for dinner. We spent the night playing Scrabble (I lost by 1 measly point!!!!), and watching Game of Thrones season 3!

Scrabble

Sunday was rainy, too, so we were lazy all morning. After breakfast and some straightening up, we headed to the movies to see Iron Man 3. It was all the action we’ve come to expect from superhero movies. As usual, we sneaked in our own popcorn, cookies, and water. The whole excursion only cost $14. If you’re on a budget and still want to go to the movies, that’s how you do it. See a matinee and sneak in your own food.

I’ve been wanting to get a library card for a while now. Since I finally have a driver’s license, we stopped by the local library (after getting lost a few times–yes, I was driving), and I got a library card. I wasn’t too impressed with the selection there, but at least I can check out books (up to 30!!!).

Window Cats

The cats were glad we were home all weekend.

There was a break in the rain Sunday afternoon, so we went for a walk around our neighborhood and the ‘hood across the street. Always cool to look at and compare people’s homes, design styles, gardening, etc. That night we ate leftovers and watched another Game of Thrones (see a pattern here?). Overall, it was a great weekend to be lazy and relax.

How was your weekend? Did it rain the whole time where you are?

Pitch Perfect Movie

Sean surprised me with an iced mocha as soon as I got back from CrossFit yesterday. He got it just how I like it–without whipped cream. Yummy! I had a delicious breakfast, answered a bunch of birthday text messages, and was surprised with a birthday message on my whiteboard when I arrived at work in the morning. My work friends are the best.

My day went pretty well. I think it was birthday magic. I went to get my tags renewed (since it was the last day of the month!!!), and I didn’t get lost, the line was short, the lady was nice, I had all the right documents AND! they signed me up for a program that took my renewal fee from $300 to $55! It was like a $250 birthday gift! That made my day!

The weather was lovely and I headed home around 5. When I got there, Sean made me come in though the front door (instead of the garage), and then we headed out to my favorite Thai food restaurant. Dinner was delicious, and I made sure not to fill myself with too much food just in case there was dessert.

When we got back home, I had to close my eyes, and Sean led me into the kitchen where there was a Happy Birthday banner and ice cream cake (my favorite!). He said, “Happy Birthday!” and popped a mini confetti cannon. So fun! We watched this past Sunday’s episode of Mad Men and started a huge old load of laundry.

Sometimes the small things are the best.

Thanks for all the happy birthday wishes yesterday!

Blackberry Winter by Sarah Jio

Blackberry WinterI bought this book for the iPad back in the beginning of March because I’d read a few good reviews about online from other bloggers. The story takes place in 2 snow storms on the same date–one in the 1930s, one in modern time. Each chapter switches back and forth. We start with Vera Ray, a resident of Seattle in the 1930s who lives with her 3-year-old son, Daniel. Vera works the night shift as a hotel maid and leaves her son at home during the nights. One night in April, while she’s working at the fancy hotel, an enormous snow storm comes overnight. She make it home, and discovers that Daniel has gone missing–his teddy bear left out in the snow. Her story tracks her trek to find Daniel.

Meanwhile, interspersed in Vera’s story, is the story of Claire, a modern-day journalist living in the same city. Claire is still recovering from losing a child of her own after an accident during pregnancy. When the same type of storm blankets Seattle in snow and ice almost a century later, Claire is put on assignment to cover the similarities between the two storms that both happen in April on the same day in different centuries. Meanwhile, she’s trying to salvage what’s left of her marriage after the lost pregnancy.

Claire discovers the story of Vera Ray and Daniel and sets out on a mission to discover the truth about what happened to this mother and son.

Overall, the book wasn’t as riveting as I’d hoped it would be. I identified better with Claire, as it seemed the Vera character was a parody of what we’d imagine the 1930s life. The story wasn’t driven by much, and the “mystery” seems to be solved with minimal detective work. It was a simple read, but not something I’d recommend. I’m hoping to find a more riveting piece for my next read. Maybe I should buy into some cheap Stephen King. I felt like Sarah Jio tried too hard to be a “big time” novelist/writer, and it just comes off as an amateurish book with a conveniently bow-tied ending.

As much as I complain about authors seeming to just quit at the end and not know how to wrap up, I feel like Sarah Jio spent too much time making sure everything was a happy ending–even to the point of abandoning one of her characters 3/4 of the way through. It was just choppy and not my favorite read. I think I need to go back to my reading list and find something that captures my attention better and is well-written.

Overall assessment, only read this if someone gives it to you for free and you want to waste some mindless time.
