Maybe She’s Born with It: My Beauty Routine

Anyone who knows me well, will read this entry title and laugh hysterically for about 10 minutes straight. I don’t do beauty. Even when I was in middle school and high school, I was more concerned with my homework than my face. Aside from bouts of acne as a teen, I don’t really remember caring much about makeup. I remember my mom nicely suggesting that I “put on a few swipes of mascara” when we’d go to people’s weddings or to church, and I remember acting like it was a hassle or just flat out lying and saying I’d done it already.

But now that I am an adult and have a real life job, I can’t just walk around like I live on a beach. I hate the beach, anyway, so I’d be miserable doing that. I also recently received my first Birchbox. It’s a $10 a month subscription box that sends you trial sizes of beauty products based on a profile you complete. I got a lot of great things, and some weird things, but it inspired me to write about what I use every day.

HAIR

I don’t generally do much with my hair. Since I’ve been CrossFitting in the mornings, I’ve been showering before work instead before bed. I use L’Oreal EverStrong Hydrating shampoo and conditioner. I love the smell of these. The shampoo has rosemary and juniper, while the conditioner smells like rosemary and mint.

I have straight thin hair, but I have a lot of it. When I let it dry on its own, it dries in big waves, but I usually wear it in a ponytail or straight. Either way, the shampoo makes my hair feel strong and hydrated–not dry and coarse. These are really affordable, too– around $7 a bottle (and that’s a high estimate), so $14ish for the pair depending on where you shop.

When I shower in the mornings, I have to blow dry my hair before work, and it has the tendency to get MEGA frizzy. To calm it down from lion head to … non-fro, I use 1 pump of Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny Serum.

I rub it in my palms, flip my head over, and scrunch it into the ends of my hair working my way up. I’ve never actually purchased this product. I get free samples in the trial size from my mom since she works at a salon. I’m assuming actually buying it isn’t cheap, though.

My blow dryer was a gift from my mom. I like it because it has an ION option, which helps tame the frizz. Or it’s a placebo effect, and I just think my hair’s less frizzy after I use it. Who knows? It’s a Helix by Hot Tools blow dryer. I just looked it up online, and holy ish, it’s expensive. Thanks, mom.

I have a flat iron and a big-barreled curling iron, but I only whip those puppies out for special occasions. I used to flat iron my hair if I took a shower the night before, let it dry while I slept, and wanted to wear it down the next day.

FACE

I’ve been using the same face wash since I was in middle school. If it ain’t broke… But really it’s because I had acne back in the day, and I’m afraid if I stop using what I’ve always used, it will come back with a vengeance. Because that makes total sense. Anyway, I’ve been using the Proactiv trio of face wash, toner, and lotion paired with Neutrogena oil free moisturizer with sunscreen.

While looking for a photo, I discovered Neutrogena makes the same lotion in SPF 35. I’m going to have to check that out!

After putting a million products on my face (cleanser, toner, lotion 1, lotion 2), I use Proactiv’s Daily Oil Control gel. It’s a watery gel, and I use it mostly on my nose and forehead. I try to avoid using it around my eyes since the skin there is super delicate and (for me) really sensitive.

MAKEUP

I keep it simple when it comes to makeup. I only use a powder foundation, mascara, and a simple eyeshadow (essentially a sparkly skin-tone). For foundation, I brush on a light coat of Neutrogena’s Skin Clearing Mineral Powder in Natural Ivory with a kabuki brush I got at CVS (also you can wash out your brushes with unscented hand soap to clean them).

I brush on a coat of Maybelline Lash Stiletto waterproof mascara.

And then swipe a tiny bit of shimmery eyeshadow on.

BODY

I’ve been using Dove bar soap for as long as I can remember. I really like their shea butter “purely pampering” bar. But I have a 12-pack to go through until I can buy it again. Hate that. It smells luxurious and Dove never leaves my skin feeling stripped and tight like other soaps do.

I’m not really big on lotions and all that jazz. When my skin starts to get dry, I really like Eucerin lotions. I have a small bottle of Eucerin PLUS Intensive Repair lotion for when the area around my eyes gets dry and sting-y. I just dap a small amount on my pinky or ring finger and gently rub around my eyelid and undereye. Eucerin’s Daily Replenishing lotion is great for after you shave your legs, too.

Sean got me two types of perfume en masse a few Christmasses ago, so I alternate between Bath & Body Works’ Twilight Woods and Sensual Amber fragrances. If he hadn’t bought these for me, I wouldn’t wear perfume.

A beautiful scent came in my first Birchbox: Joie Folle de Joie eau de parfum. However, it’s $98 for a > 4oz bottle, so I probably won’t be purchasing the full size. Maybe I’ll save my trial for special occasions.

What are your go-to beauty products? Do you have a lot? Now that I write them all down, it seems like I use a lot.

Resolution Recap – February

It’s finally Friday! It’s also March.

Dancing Bear GIF

So it’s time to see how everyone’s doing with their New Year’s Resolutions! I’ve never tried to keep up with my resolutions like this before, but I find it helps to keep my mindful of what I’m doing well (so I can continue the success), and what I need to work on to accomplish all my goals.

Ok, here we go.

1. Run 520 miles.

Cold weather running

Still not even close. I thought this one would be an easy one to keep up with (I’m not counting soccer game mileage into this), but I’m only running about 4 miles a week (weak!) with one of my coworkers on our Wednesday lunch breaks. He’s a speedy runner, but I really do need something to train for to really amp up my mileage!

2. Write a novel.

Also not going so well. I really have no motivation to do this by the time I get home. I’m probably going to put this one on the back burner for a while.

3. Read a new book every month.

I read the amazing The Beautiful Mystery at the beginning of Feb and am making my way through Beyond Belief, a biography about Scientology. Pretty interesting so far…

4. Save $2000+.

“Yay, you can get us a new tree!”

So far, so good. I’m on track to save WAY more than this by the time Christmas rolls around. Boom. Never thought I’d be good at saving. The key is to keep up the trend when it’s gift-giving time!

5. Stop biting my nails.

I just got a special nail polish in the mail that’s supposed to support nail growth and deter nail-biting. I got it yesterday, and plan to get it on my hands tonight or tomorrow. It had the best reviews of all the same types of polishes on Amazon. I know it’s more than just nail polish, though. I’ve got to work on my will power in the nail-biting area, too.

6. Get a tattoo.

Haven’t gotten one yet, but I’m looking into it. Gotta save that $$ first.

7. Buy no new clothes in 2013.

This one wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. Now that I work in a place that doesn’t mind if I wear my old lady turtlenecks with cardigans and jeans, I don’t feel like I need to keep up with the latest fashions. Also, I’m much more comfortable all the time. :)

8. Eat out only once a month.

If you remember, I didn’t eat out in January, so I ate out twice in February to make up for it. Once for Thai food (OMG, yum), and once for burritos. When you only have 1 chance to eat out a month, you choose the restaurants you know will make you happy.

Money resolutions are going well this year, writing and fitness resolutions–eh, not so much. Need to work on that department!

How are you doing with your New Year’s Resolutions?

2013 New Year’s Resolutions

Hooray! It’s almost 2013. Sean thinks it’s a bad omen to end the year in 13, but it’s gotta happen at least once every century! Why not make the most of it?

I recently posted about how well I did on my 2012 resolutions. Overall, I’d say I stuck with the program (for the most part, anyway). This year, I’m working on many goals–health and fitness, money, and personal. Wanna get started?

Ok, here we go:

1. Run 520 miles. This seems like a lot at first glance. Whoa! 520 miles? But I’m splitting that up over the year, so it’s only 10 miles a week. Not bad at all, actually. I have a hard time running when I’m not training for anything, so having a goal like this will hopefully keep me on track. And I’m hoping to build up for a larger goal in 2014! Maybe 1000 miles!

2. Write a novel. This past year, I tried to make this goal really specific–writing 4 pages of non-work, non-blog anything a week. Well, I definitely didn’t even do this the first week of 2012. So I’m trying a less specific and more create way of making myself write for me as opposed to writing because I feel obligated.

3. Read a new book every month. This isn’t new. I pretty much make this resolution every year. 12 books a year is pretty much nothing. Remember when we were in college and read 12 books before the semester even started? When did I become so literarily lazy? (Maybe when  decided to start making up words like “literarily…”)

4. Save $2000+ dollars. I really did myself a disservice and drained my bank accounts this Christmas. It’s a horrible disease I have that I really like getting people a lot for the holidays just because I like feeling like I “nailed it” when they open their gifts. I need to plump back up my emergency fund, because I can’t really afford for anything out of line to happen right now, and that’s not a good feeling!

5. Stop biting my nails. This is a pretty disgusting habit that I’ve had since I can remember. Sean says my fingers look like little round alien digits because I’ve been without nails for my whole life. think about all the germs that are going in my mouth when I bite my nails. I do attribute my awesome immune system to this childhood habit, but it’s time for me to grow up and stop this unprofessional little mannerism. Plus, it annoys the bejesus out of Sean.

6. Get a tattoo. I’ve been really non-committal about getting a tattoo, but I’ve been wanting to do it for a while now. I have a whole board on Pinterest dedicated to the tattoos I like. I’m not going to go all out and get a huge sleeve or something, but I don’t think a little tattoo ever hurt anybody… Figuratively, of course.

7. Buy no new clothes in 2013. This one is a big one. I think clothes are one of my biggest money-sucks of all time. There’s really no need for me to have 5 black skirts. I have 5 pairs of jeans. Why do I keep buying more? I get tons of pairs of socks for Christmas. I have a thousand t-shirts. You get the picture. Exceptions to this resolution include gift cards which are not my money and can therefore be spent on clothes. I haven’t decided if I’ll let myself buy used clothes yet (like from a thrift store or the Goodwill).

8. Eat out only 1 time a month. Sean and I used to be pretty good about NOT eating out, but sometimes life gets busy. We resorted to eating out WAY too much in 2012. What’s especially bad is when you have the groceries to make the dishes you’re choosing to go somewhere else to pay to eat. I want to keep this down to 1 time a month.

What are your 2013 New Year’s resolutions?
