The Resolutions of 2012

It’s that time of year! Bloggers across the nation will be letting you know what they resolutions are for 2013. I mentioned it before, but I’ve already got my list going on. Before I reveal my big goals for the two-oh-one-three, I thought we could go over this year’s goals, and see how I did.

Gulp.

1. Write one page of (non-work, non-blog) something a day. I didn’t do this at all. Yikes. I made a similar resolution for 2013, but this one is a little less specific. Maybe less pressure on myself will help me achieve it?

2. Eat a serving of vegetables at least once a day. You’d think, as a vegetarian, this wouldn’t be too hard, but you’d be surprised at how much bread I can put away. I think I did a pretty good job of this in 2012. I didn’t keep strict track of everything I ate, but I’m generalizing that I did ok.

3. Run a half marathon and be able to do 40 push ups in a row, on my toes. Well, you win some, you lose some. I definitely ran a half marathon, and then a full marathon this year! Boom! However, there’s no way on this green earth that I can do 40 push ups in a row on my toes–full form. Sorry self!

4. Score at least one goal in soccer this year. Knocked this one out of the park this year, too. I didn’t keep track of how many goals I scored. But there were weekends where, among the 4 teams I played on, I scored a total of 6 goals.

5. Read one new book a month. Another one I didn’t really keep track of this year. In fact, I even cut down on my book review blogging. I did read a lot of good things this year though. I finished the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. I finished Eating Animals. I read a bunch of health and fitness books. I inhaled Tina Fey’s Bossypants. All in all, I’m happy with my reading intake in 2012.

6. Save for a new car. Done and done. I love Doc Holliday with a fiery passion. Best car ever.

7. Dedicate at least 4 hours a month to an activity that benefits someone else. I sort of did this. I was more involved toward the end of the year than at the beginning, but I’ve managed to get some community service into the mix. Check out my volunteer blog at NPSRiverChat.org!

8. Attend at least one yoga class a week. This was a SUPER beneficial resolution. I really looked forward to my Friday night yoga classes. After a while, though, it became harder for the YMCA to find a teacher to fill that gap, and the class was canceled in December. Sad face.

9. Visit 2 places in Georgia I’ve never been. Welp, I can’t say I tracked this one, but I did try a lot of new things this year. A lot of new restaurants, festivals, and more. I stepped out of my bubble little by little in 2012.

10. Make more friends and have more meaningful relationships. I think I definitely made this one happen. I have a lot more friends than when I first moved down here (duh), and some I feel like I can really talk to. So, go me!

How did you do on 2012 resolutions?

Scars

I’ve always found scars really interesting. My new job, which does a lot of marketing for plastic surgeons and cosmetic altering businesses, has brought appearances to the forefront of my attention. One service offered by a lot of cosmetic laser dermatologists, etc. is scar removal.

I can’t imagine life without my scars. That being said, I know I don’t have any huge face-covering scars. I know that some people don’t want reminders of things that happened to them. Or they feel like people see the scar instead of the person who’s behind it. I’m not in the business of judging people who want to try to get rid of those.

I don’t have any super-prominent scars. I have two on my eyelid from getting stitches there… twice. The first time I fell on a jungle gym. The second time I jumped off a bunk bed. I have one on the inside of my right middle finger from falling in the shower. I have one on my arm from burning it on the oven door the first time I made pizza. I have scars on my arms and legs from playing sports.

I like them all. They all have good stories associated with them. Maybe I’ll tell you some one day.

However, I was looking up scarring yesterday and came upon a some pages looking at celebrities who have prominent scars, and I thought you’d be interested in knowing some celeb tid-bits. Maybe not.

Padma Lakshmi's 7 inch scar

Padma Lakshmi was in a car accident when she was younger and this seven inch scar down her arm is a result. When she got older, she tried to have it removed through injections and laser treatments, but they were very painful. She went to a photo shoot once after a treatment and the makeup artist and photographer were saddened by her lack of scar. The photographer made the makeup artist add color to the scar making it look like it hadn’t undergone therapy. From then on, Lakshmi refused to undergo any more treatment and enjoys not hiding her scar in her private life.

Harrison Ford's chin scar

Harrison Ford's chin scar

Harrison Ford’s chin scar came from when he tried to buckle up while losing control of his car in 1968. His scar has been incorporated in two of his movies. In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade it is said that Jones hit himself in the face with his whip. And in Working Girl his character claims to have gotten the scar from a knife fight, but later admits to hitting his face on a toilet after passing out from getting his ear pierced.

Catherine Zeta Jones has a barely noticeable tracheotomy scar on her neck.

When Catherine Zeta Jones was a child, she had a virus which impaired her ability to breathe. As a result she had a tracheotomy and the scar remains. Elizabeth Taylor also supposedly had a tracheotomy, leaving a similiar scar on her neck.

Tina Fey's scar on her chin/cheek

Tiny Fey reportedly got this scar from an incident that occurred when she was just 5 years old. Someone approached her in her yard and slashed her in the face! A 5 year old!

Sharon Stone's neck scar

Sharon Stone supposedly got this scar from a horseback riding accident where she ran into a taut cord.

I like scars. Hopefully if you have some, you can embrace them and the life lessons they taught you. They’re beautiful!
