Jillian Michaels’ Killer Buns & Thighs – Level 1 Review

Have I told you all how much I love Jillian Michaels? Oh I have? Well, for the record, I love Jillian Michaels.

Much like her Ripped in 30, Killer Buns & Thighs is a short, sweet 30-minute long workout, but this one focuses mainly on your butt and upper legs. I did level 1 Monday night and totally had fun while sweating my face off.

While it’s not joke that I don’t have super-model legs (I’d sincerely like to thank soccer and genetics for the thunder thighs), I’m not really in the market to “lean” up my thighs or tone my badonkadonk. I mean, I’m not fantasizing about becoming Beyonce or Giselle. Really, I just got it because I’m getting bored again, and need a mix-up in my routine. Oh, and because it’s Jillian.

While it’s easy to stick to an arm routine (Sean usually does arms every other day, so it’s easy to piggyback onto his workout), I always justify not doing legs by saying, “Running is a leg workout.” Or, “I’m working my legs when I kick during boxing.” You get the picture.

So in order to actually jump back on the total body bandwagon, I got this DVD.

Much like her Ripped in 30 DVD, it’s a pretty fast-paced workout. You only stay on a certain move for a short period of time, and you quickly rotate through a series two times before moving on to the next series, and there are only three sets before the stretch.

My hamstrings were a little sore Tuesday, but what I liked most about it was that it seemed like Jillian was actually having fun. She was laughing and making jokes with the other worker-outers, and I felt like I was seeing a side of the real Jillian Michaels, like she was right there in my house.

In terms of moves, none of them are really tough. There are a few that are pretty high impact, but it’s the repetition and form that really gets you. If you’re doing the move correctly, the amount of time you spend doing it will really kill your legs. It feels good.

Just like in her other weight-based DVDs, it’s a mix of cardio- and weight-training along with body-weight exercise that you probably could do without the DVD, but you wouldn’t actually do on your own, you know?

I know I’m kind of biased since I’m secretly hoping Jillian Michaels will find me and beg to be my BFF, but I totally recommend this workout DVD.

Update: I took kickboxing Tuesday night after Killer Buns & Thighs Monday night. Yeeeeouch! Let’s just say by the end of kickboxing, my legs were screaming. My instructor tried talking to me about some things after class, but I was in complete zombie mode, waiting for my legs to give out. Now if only Jillian would come out with Killer Arms & Shoulders!

  1. My hubby is always working out, I’ve always been lazy though so I’ve HATED working out, so I haven’t in about 3 years. (Yes I’m totally out of shape) We reached a compromise and I agreed to try for 2 months. I’m only on day 3, but already feeling better about myself. Today I tried level 1 of this video… Sadly I didn’t make it all the way through. I’m going to have to work up to this one. She totally kicked my butt! But I’m sure I’m going to love it.

  3. Thank you for your review! Started 30DS this morning and I’m so out of shape. Wanna really stick to it though! Planning on starting C25K in 2 weeks too then at the end of 30DS, I wanna alternate between Ripped in 30 or Killer Buns and Thighs. I do love your idea about killer arms and shoulders ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. omg i just got the dvd yesterday and my legs and butt are so sore …. i started today and i’m hoping to look awesome by time it gets warm enough to swim lol .

  5. Yep, I also thought that level 1 was quite easy and then almost couldnยดt move my legs after the second time I did it ๐Ÿ™‚ I was surprised how “sweaty” the workout is!
