I know I shouldn’t complain because traffic in places like India is a million times worse than good old Woodstock, or even Atlanta. However, I’ve noticed there are quite a few jerk faces on the roads that seem to feel like they can do whatever they want (probably because their tax dollars go into those roads, right? So technically they own them.).
Anyway, in the past few months, I’ve had some awesome experiences, though I’ve thankfully managed to avoid any wrecks (KNOCK ON WOODZ!). Beyond the large number of people who blatantly text and drive (while behind me! in stop and go traffic!), there are other ridiculous traffic moments I’ve been honored to take part in.
One took place on my way to work one morning at a 4-way intersection. I was in a left turn lane and the light was green. It wasn’t an arrow, though, so I had to wait for a break in the oncoming traffic from the other direction. Finally there was one, and I accelerated to make the turn when I saw the person to the right of me, in the go-straight lane, whip out in front of me to make the left turn from his lane.
I had to slam on my brakes right as the light turned yellow/red, so I was stuck further out into the intersection than I’d originally been.
I was obviously a little freaked out since I was SUPER close to a car accident, and most of the people in the other lanes saw what happened too. (I imagine them shaking their fists in solidarity with me.) But some old guy who was on the perpendicular streets and turning left into the lane closest to mine apparently thought I was some punk jerk trying to mess up traffic on purpose, and when turning left, slowed down to probably 5mph and got as close to my car as he could while giving me the stink eye about being a little out in the intersection.
What a tool! I was freaking out already at narrowly avoiding an accident and almost got in another one while he mean mugged me to teach me a lesson.
I almost cried because I’m a weenie and cry when my feelings are hurt. But I can tell you that I didn’t.
Anyway, it’s Monday so I guess the point is to drink some extra coffee, listen to a music/radio station that makes you feel at peace with the world, and remember that everyone has somewhere to go and we all get there a lot faster when we’re not trying to kill each other with giant metal vehicles.
Also, someone in Kennesaw got shot during a wicked road rage battle, so keep yourself under control.
